Mining incidents are not uncommon, what magnifies these incidents is the attention it gets in the media these days. This is not a bad thing because the media exposure has provoked more simulators for mining training. These are preventative measures that prepare a new miner for problems experienced by past miners.

Safety First

There are certain training methods that new miners are required to take. The three area are:

- Mining Simulation

- Safety Precautions

- Emergency Procedures

As far as the basic training on what goes on inside a mine and how to function within that environment, this training takes place either in a mine simulator or in an actual mine.

Training Classes

The first class we want to talk about is called “Confined Space Training“.
Miners find themselves many times having to work in a tight, confined environment. The dynamics of this space is quite different compared to a normal working environment. A miner has to deal with atmospheric pressure changes, there can be high level of contaminants they must deal with, there can be extremely restrictive entrances and exits, these are some of the areas a class like this covers.

These classes are beneficial for new hires because it raises their comfort level. Panic is the number one enemy for miners, if you have familiarity with a set of circumstances and you have trained in the proper responses, then your chances of surviving it go way up.
That’s what these classes teach you.

Induction Class

In the mining business there is a class called Induction Training. This is a training class that provides a broad overview of mining elements. The following are some of the more prominent areas covered in the class:

- Legislation

- General Safety

- Risk Management

- Basic First Aid

- Emergency Procedures

- Fire Fighting Prevention

The class generally runs from three to five days. The intention of these classes is to give new miners a basic introductory education of mining, then when hired they will get further on the job training under actual mining conditions.

These classes not only benefit the new miner as far as safety is concerned, but it gives them an edgewhen it comes to employment. Employers looking to hire new miners will definitely add a few points to a resume that includes this type of training. These classes are not just for new hires, there is a refresher course which is about a day shorter for experienced miners too.

New safety procedures are being implemented all the time, new miners talking these classes will benefit by being trained in these new procedures. Experienced miners are encouraged to take refresher classes to stay current with the new procedures. These training classes are the positive results of past accidents, take advantage of them.
